How do I...?

How do I find movie listings, showtimes, ratings, reviews and filmmaker blogs?

Search: If you know the title of the movie, type any portion of the title in the search box and press "enter". If there is only one matching title, the movie page will appear. Each movie page details showtimes, ratings, reviews and filmmaker's blog. If multiple movie titles contain the search word, a list will appear. Click on the name of the desired movie to access that movie's information.

Browse all Movies: If you do not know the title of the movie, you can browse all movie listings by clicking the "Movies" link under "Do you want to watch movies?" From the list, you can click on a movie listing to access the movie's information page.

Browse all Movies by Showtime: If you would like to view all movies showing at a particular time, click on "Schedule" under "Do you want to watch movies?" From the schedule, you can click on a movie listing to access the movie's information page.

How are ratings calculated for 'Top-Rated' films?

We use the same true Bayesian estimate formula used by imdb.com to calculate their Top 250 films (described here). This formula takes the average rating for a film, and adjusts it relative to other films based on how many ratings it has, as well as relative to the average rating of all films.

This calculation compensates for the fact that a film with only a few ratings will not be as accurately represented by an average of those ratings as a film with many ratings would be.

For the mathematically curious, the formula for the true Bayesian estimate is:

    weighted rank (WR) = (v / (v+m)) * R + (m / (v+m)) * C
    where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed as Top-Rated (currently 3)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 3.8)

How do I upload and format my trailer for inclusion on the website?

Filmmakers may upload trailers to be included on their film's detail page.

To upload a trailer, follow the guidelines below for formatting, and use the information supplied to you by your festival contact to send in the trailer.

Trailer formatting should follow these guidelines:

  • Name: Please include the name of the festival and the name of your film somewhere in the filename of the the trailer.
  • Video Encoding: all trailers should either be MPEG 2 or MPEG 4 encoded at 1000kbps or less into a .MPG .MOV or .AVI file format.
  • Video Formating: trailers that are 4:3 in aspect ratio and at least 320x240 are preferred, but 16:9, at least 320x180 is acceptable.
